5 Ways Parents Can Guide A Safe Learning Environment Check in with your child. When returning to in-person schooling, your child might struggle or your child might breeze through their assignments with ease. Please do not make assumptions of what you think will happen and how your child will adapt to the change, instead, check in with your child. Talk about what they are feeling. Ask them how they are feeling, what their concerns are about returning to the school campus, and help them make plans about their learning.
Make a schedule or routine. It is important to establish a schedule and routine that supports your child's needs for their education. Having a schedule will secure stability and decrease your child's instinct to divert from the plan. Creating and posting a timed morning and afternoon schedule will help keep them on track with what they should be doing. Build and improve your child's work ethic. Model a good work ethic so your child can see what a good work ethic looks like. Research has shown that establishing a strong work ethic during childhood is a good predictor of adult success. Schooling is a perfect opportunity to facilitate a strong work ethic in your child. When talking about their schoolwork, focus on the skills they are learning and the importance of seeing a task through.
Stay positive. The way for children to learn is by following examples of others. Our energy comes and goes, but we must maintain a positive attitude. Remain calm and positive. Try to lead your child by your positive attitude and also find role models in your community, family and friend groups, and on TV. These role models can be support for your child. They can help you teach and inspire your child when you point out the person's perseverance and grit during difficult and changing times.
